Concept Art Dd - Drawing Contest [3 entries]

Long John Silver Picture

Winning entry, with a score of:
79.4%
Contest goal:

Digital Drawing: Imagine this scenario: there's going to be a new, real life characters movie about Treasure Island (from the book by Robert Louis Stevenson). This movie will be in the style of 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.

Think 'Alice in Wonderland' kind of characters and 'Pirates of the Caribbean' story and action. This movie will be for an audience of 12 years and older (so no young children!). The action part of the movie is important, but so is the character design which should be extraordinary.

Your goal: make a proposal / concept for one of the characters in this story which can be translated towards a character in the movie. You can download this book for free here. Your characters must be original and have no clear reference of an existing character. Meaning no copies of the referred movies or any other movie / comic characters.
REMEMBER these contests require that you post at least 2 intermediate steps of your drawing in a step by step guide, so we can see the progress of your work.

Status: finished. Check out the winners below!

Long John Silver is a very complex and self-contradictory character. He is cunning and mendacious, hiding his true intentions from Squire Trelawney while posing as the ship’s genial cook. He is very disloyal, shifting sides so frequently that we cannot be sure of his true affiliations. He is greedy and has an almost animal nature, caring little about human relations, as we see in his cold-blooded murder of Tom Redruth. Nonetheless, Silver is without question the most vital and charismatic character in the novel. Though lacking a leg, he moves swiftly and powerfully across unsteady decks and spryly hoists himself over fences. His physical defect actually showcases his strength of character, revealing with every step his ability to overcome obstacles. Likewise, Silver’s mental resolve is impressive: he is the only one of the pirates not to be spooked by Ben’s imitation of the dead Flint’s voice. He remains rational in the face of his men’s collective superstitions, driving them forward to the treasure site. Silver’s “two-hundred-year-old” parrot, which screeches dead men’s words, gives the pirate an almost satanic aura. He has obvious leadership abilities, as he is able to maintain control of his ragged and surly band of mutineers to the very end of their search, through heavy losses and suspicions of treachery.

OKAY, I got it WRONG for Parrot to Cockatoo!! So, I assume it would be a nice 'brand-new' partner concept of this LJS. Done entirely with Photoshop CS5 & Wacom Cintiq. 2 days of work, can't remember the exact amount of time flies.

Main Character Concept Art of Treasure Island.

Done with Photoshop CS5 + Wacom Cintiq. Approximately 17 hours of work within 2-3 days while working alongside the other contest theme & commercial projects. +1 hours to remove & change the submitted entry.

P.S. - Still, I'm NO 'pirate boy'. Lol. Make art not war.

(!) Please check my imperfect SBS first before commenting, since I've already (really) tired of it.

EDIT: Removed textures, font, and also my official statements/testimonials. Cropped to fit the composition.

Good Luck to everyone~! (5 years and 1957 days ago)

I want to create concept art that feels so old or retro after taking my free time to read the eBook of Treasure Planet today. Then I pick one of the characters that named Dr. Livesey.

---

Dr. Livesey is wise and practical, and Jim respects but is not inspired by him. Livesey exhibits common sense and rational thought while on the island, and his idea to send Ben to spook the pirates reveals a deep understanding of human nature. He is fair-minded, magnanimously agreeing to treat the pirates with just as much care as his own wounded men. As his name suggests, Livesey represents the steady, modest virtues of everyday life rather than fantasy, dream, or adventure.

---

Done in less then 5 hours, with Photoshop CS5 & Wacom Cintiq. Please take your little time to see my SBS though it wasn't good enough to explain everything.

Thank you for reviewing my work, seeing it at the details, hope you'll enjoy this little piece of concept art.

Last but not least, critiques & comments most welcome. (5 years and 1954 days ago)
