I agree with your way of looking at the contests. Comments and votes count for so much and are a encouragement for people to continue with their works, get more passionate about their project at hand and will strive to do better when people have something constructive to say and give credit where credit is due. Even for someone like myself just starting out with Photoshop and stumbling across Pxleyes about a week ago, wanting to improve my art and someday enter live contest in my area for design projects for fundraisers.
