Pxleyes Top 50 Photography Contest Pictures Of May 2010

Another month of thrilling photography contests has ended! We’ve collected the 50 highest scoring entries from the Pxleyes photography contests that were active during the month May 2010… This list is ranked by the final scores of the entries.

The most spectacular pictures were submitted in the impact, primary colors, holes, defocus and black sheep contest. 50. In Flight

Contest goal:
Airplanes, birds, insects or anything else we dream about. Man is enthralled by the idea of flying.

Take a picture of anything in “flight.” Other things can be in the shot, but the subject should be flying. Also, ‘flying’ is NOT ‘falling.’

 

49. Always On Duty

Contest goal:
Think of a SINGLE word that you could pronounce by combining two or more items into a picture. Your title should be a CLUE, but not say the answer. You cannot use pictures of letters to spell out your words, Try not to put the actual word in the title, so voters should have try to at least guess before looking for the answer in the details box. Judging should be based on creativity and fun factor.

Contest goal:
We’ve long been drawn to reptiles, whether it’s their cold, calculating reptilian behavior, or their lounging in the heat without a care. We’re repulsed by them while being fascinated by them.

Take a photo of your favorite reptile. It can be in the wild or captivity, and can include people as long as the reptile is the main subject.

 

47. Early morning fill-up

Contest goal:
Most of us have pumped our own gas into our car. It’s such a common sight some of us might have even photographed it.

So use your imagination and get the most creative shot of someone filling their tank at the gas pump. There must be at least one person in the shot.

 

46. Tobacco Field

Contest goal:
Farmland can be a very beautiful subject. It’s inspired poetry by William Wordsworth and Beethoven’s 6th symphony. Bucolic hills with grazing cattle or a barnyard full of chickens can make many wish to turn their backs on the hustle and bustle of city life.

Take a creative shot of a farm or a field, but make sure it’s a rural area. Animals and people are allowed as long as they fit into the farm theme.

We’ve long been drawn to reptiles, whether it’s their cold, calculating reptilian behavior, or their lounging in the heat without a care. We’re repulsed by them while being fascinated by them.

Contest goal:
We’ve got a lot of talented photographers here. But, are they really talented, or do they get their “talent” from the expensive and sophisticated cameras they have? They have to prove to us that they really have talent in this contest.
Your goal is to take the worst camera that you have (mobile phone cameras would be very appreciated) and show your talent! You may photograph anything you want, but mention in the description box what camera you used and its number of megapixels. Good luck!

 

42. Dancing

Contest goal:
‘Focus’ is one of the most important elements of photography. An image focused well is appreciated by everyone. But don’t assume that ‘focus’ always means ‘in focus’

Sometimes a ‘defocused’ image looks beautiful too. Let’s try to search for beauty in ‘OOF.’ For example look at this defocused lights picture.. The originality should be the key factor for this idea.

 

41. Kill The Lights

Contest goal:
We have had stop motion/high speed photography contests in the past, but they usually have fairly broad guidelines. Let’s make this one more specific.
Take a shot of glass breaking. Not glass that is already broken, but is actually in the process of breaking.

Contest goal:
Almost everything we see is made up of some combination of the primary colors as they are the building blocks for every other color.

In this contest, your goal is to get a subject that clearly shows all three primary colors (Red, yellow, blue). They don’t have to be the only colors in the shot but they do have to be clearly visible. Anything goes as far as what’s in the shot.

Contest goal:
Stairs to the cellar, or Stairway to Heaven – we use stairs to go up or down from one place to another. Some are carved into mountains and some are beautiful parts of architecture, but they all serve essentially the same purpose.
Your task is to take an artistic shot of any type of stair. Good luck !

Contest goal:
The many different shapes, sizes and colors of grass can be found almost anywhere.
For this contest take a picture where grass is the focal point. Other objects can be in the shot, but make sure the grass is the main subject.

37. Light as air

Contest goal:

36. Seven Years

Contest goal:

Contest goal:
When we’re inside, most of us don’t bother to look up. But if we did, we might see some amazing things covering our heads. There might be a glass ceiling, a boat’s ceiling or other unexpected forms.

Your job in this contest is simple. Find an unusual ceiling and take a shot of it. You can shoot any ceiling other than brick. Good luck!

A ceiling is an overhead interior surface that bounds (“ceils”) the upper limit of a room. It is generally not a structural element, but a finished surface concealing the underside of the floor or roof structure above.

Contest goal:
Have you lived in the same place all of your life? Or, did you just move in last week? Each neighborhood seems to have its own personality, and we all are tied to them.

For this contest, take a picture of something that represents the neighborhood you live in. This theme is pretty subjective, so be sure to use the description to say WHY the chosen subject represents your neighborhood.

30. Out Of The Ashes

Contest goal:
One of the main ways people relax is to sit with a nice cup of coffee. And when we relax, we often let our minds wander. So when you’re relaxing with your coffee, look at it, and you may see figures such as hearts, trees, or animals.
We might see those figures in the steam, the foam of an espresso, or the swirls after adding cream. Whatever the case, take a photo of it and send here! The figure must be clearly visible!

Take a shot of anything curly – simple as that. No restrictions, except that it can’t be curly hair. Your subject must be a curly object.

 

27. Delite in Black & White

Contest goal:
Springtime brings the new growth of life throughout the land. Buds, blades, bulbs, and blossoms catch our attention all around. But if you take the time to look in the dark, damp places, you can also see that the ‘fungus is among us.’
To celebrate spring, take a fun shot of some of the different types of mushrooms that are out there. Alone or in groups, but no people.

 

26. High and low

Contest goal:
Have you lived in the same place all of your life? Or, did you just move in last week? Each neighborhood seems to have its own personality, and we all are tied to them.

For this contest, take a picture of something that represents the neighborhood you live in. This theme is pretty subjective, so be sure to use the description to say WHY the chosen subject represents your neighborhood.

Contest goal:
We’ve all gotten angry and wanted to punch a wall before. Well, now’s your chance!

The object of this contest is to showcase an impact of some sort. Cars, fists, balls, or whatever you can think of can be used in this shot (so long as they are striking something else). People ARE allowed, but please be careful (e.g. don’t sneak up on your friend and sock him in the jaw just to get a cool photo). Be creative and try for clarity/lack of blur.

Contest goal:
Stairs to the cellar, or Stairway to Heaven – we use stairs to go up or down from one place to another. Some are carved into mountains and some are beautiful parts of architecture, but they all serve essentially the same purpose.

23. flying colors

Contest goal:

22. Brown Belt

Contest goal:
If we pay attention we’d notice that there are people in work uniforms all around us. They might be the uniforms of school children or flight attendants, but people at work often don’t wear their own clothes.

Take a shot of adults or children wearing uniforms – so do not show an uniform on a hanger. Also, a regular business suit will not be considered a work uniform.

21. Mini Monster

Contest goal:
“Practice makes perfect,” and many artisans take steps to ensure their final product will be what they had in mind. A “maquette” is a small sculpture made as a trial or sketch for a larger piece.

Your task in this contest is to take a shot of a maquette. Any style is acceptable; an airplane, a boat or even a house. Good luck!

19. The Hang-mans Knot

Contest goal:
“Triskaidekaphobia” is defined as the “Fear” of the number “13.” Many buildings avoid the thirteenth floor, many airports do not have a 13th flight or gate, and many cities do not have a 13 Avenue or street. However, the Last Supper had 13 diners with Jesus and the 12 disciples, there are traditionally 13 witches in a coven and so on.

For the purposes of this contest we will embrace and clearly define this number. Take a photograph that has a direct connection to the number 13. Any subject matter is appropriate as long as it adds up to, or defines, the number of 13.

16. magic

Contest goal:
Most of us love to look at optical illusions. We can see things that are really not there and have to take a closer look to see what we are actually looking at.

Take a shot of an optical illusion. For example: this picture of buttons on a mirror – This picture looks like a button bracelet, but it isn’t. Take a shot of an optical illusion. Be creative and make the audience really examine your photo to figure out what you’ve done.

15. the insides of a construction

Contest goal:
Humans are like ants – constantly building. We build sidewalks in front of our homes, and giant malls that hold thousands.

Get pictures of construction, whether a half built skyscraper, road work, carpenters, workers in hard hats – anything considered construction by definition. However, it has to be an actual construction site of some sort and not say a home fix it project.

 

14. Better to light a Candle…

Contest goal:
Remember the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears?” There were three bears; a big daddy bear, a medium momma bear, and a small baby bear.

Your task is to take a shot of three similar objects; one big, one medium and one small, arranged in an interesting manner. The size difference must be well demonstrated between the three objects. Good luck!

 

13. Curly bamboo

Contest goal:
Take a shot of anything curly – simple as that. No restrictions, except that it can’t be curly hair. Your subject must be a curly object.

12. Warped And Wet

Contest goal:
“Jowling,” (sometimes known as “slap n’ flap”) is a little hard to capture well, but always fun to view.

How do you do it? Get your subject to relax their facial muscles completely (to the point that they have no facial expression). Then, while staying relaxed, have them open their eyes and mouth (and try to keep them open) and shake their head from side to side as fast as they can. Start snapping (use a flash and fast shutter speed to freeze the ‘action’)!

Contest goal:
From the bar scene in Star Wars to the glitzy numbers of Cabaret, we’ve all seen how bars can be photographed and filmed.

Take a picture of a bar scene with at least two people in the shot. It must be in an actual bar – sorry, no studio shots!

Contest goal:
Anyone can spot the black sheep in the flock of white ones. We’ve taken this scene and applied it in many different ways where humans are involved. But we label the one who ‘sticks out’ as the black sheep.

Take a photo of your interpretation of the saying, “the black sheep of the family.” It can either be the oddball of the bunch, or the one with undesirable characteristics (physical or personality.) To help you out, here is a link for the phrase

When something is missing from a whole, it has a hole in it. Some of these are easier to see than others. We can’t see a hole in our heart, or a hole in our soul, but we can see them in many objects around us.

Your task is very simple. Take a shot of anything that has holes in it. It might be cheese, a piece of cloth or a keyhole. Anything, as long as one or more holes are present. Good luck!
