This is very cool, author, great concept for the main character, love the chair and scepter idea. If you have time, just work on the edges of the small white character to blend into the background a little more. Love that you added purple in this to contrast with the orangey tones of the source. Author, I must agree with Geexman, even though I respect you and your work. This entry could almost be a test case for our discussions in the forum about this very mix of 2D and 3D. There's just too much 3D here to be admissable. Look harder for other 2D sources, or change your idea to fit what you can find. I'm getting tired of this 2D vs. 3D argument, and ironically I think you're proving my point here. Again, no ill will toward you, but this is not a 2D entry. Reply »

Last week i had an entry removed twice.. both time with source images from FLIKR that where marked as free.. provided the link and all.
I don't agree that this is a 90% 3D entry.All the textures were done in PS, the assembly that took a lot more time than modeling was done in PS, all the masking... and lets face it now.. the end result looks decent
CMYK i respect your opinion too. If you don't like it, vote as you feel.My main focus is to build an online portfolio that includes 3d also. I plan on making another entry now that i allready have the cup masked, and it will be 3D free . Reply »

I have to agree with r1k3r. The entry is well within the rules and is clearly explained in the SBS. The author has made a nice entry that fits clearly within the guidelines as they stand. Why bring this up on this particular entry when we seen half a dozen each week using 3D models, mostly from one particular author where nobody ever mentions anything about his 3D usage. @ r1k3r I suggest you read the comments as closely as you read the rulebook son...when did I suggest a breach of the rules? You can create an entire image in 3d and make a minor change in photoshop for it to be within the rules, but that doesn't mean I have to appreciate it. While I would prefer to see a 2D only contest, I argree with r1k3r and solkee their comments are most correct, the rules have been adhered to, the author has done nothing wrong.
Regarding your entry author you really haven't used the source very much, I prefer more inventive use of source images although the work is nice.
You also commented that you had an entry removed twice and said you provided proper link and the image was free to use. That infers unfair treatment from the moderator. What you failed to mention is that the image was determined to be previously manipulated and once you corrected that you republished it and it remained in the contest.
You also mentioned "the same thing applies to the entries that have 90% drawing??", last time I checked drawing is 2 dimensional and has always been a part of these contests. Reply »

@spaceranger: I didn't said that my entry was unjustly removed,i only said that i found the pictures on free stock websites and they where marked as free to use but the mods clarrified that they where photoshoped or copyrighted...
I do appreciate the mods job (not an easy job). they are here to enforce this website's rules.

About the drawing... i wanted to subliniate that there is a separate category for drawing and there isn't so much drama when an entry has a lot of drawing. There are few pure chop entries. Don't see why 3d has to be the black sheep.

All the voting is subjective, so everyone should vote acording to their taste or don't vote at all...

In the future i'll try to separate the two, or use less 3D in my entries!.

I've no objection at all to what you have created or the method used, it's a well made entry as it is. You could have used the contest source to build the entire arm, there's enough raw material in the image for that. I've always felt source contests should utilize the image in ways that create an image unjque to that source. To me that's the challenge. I think we shouldn't call these "Photoshop" contests and I advocate the addition of a separate contest for Photoshop/2D while keeping these "Computer Graphics" as they are. It's wrong to voice objections to an entry when all criteria is met as per contest rules. Reply »

I would've liked to see a different method of highlights and shadows. The burn method you've used has added extra saturation in darker areas. When shading I almost always use a black brush set to 5% opacity. This guarantees shaded regions don't gain unnatural saturation. I also think the eye could use some more light. Perhaps over dodging it will create a more realistic light. Also the other eye needs more shading under it. Good luck author! Reply »

I think it would have been more noticable about the half evil half cuddly if it was really half/half, such as having the red eye and metal show on the side of the robot arm. But then again that would have been too literal. Oh well, its cute...ish hehe. Reply »

Too dark. It's very difficult to see all the effort you put into the background.
Also your light source is inconsistent. Something is shining on top of the dome, but on the side of the light house, yet not at all on the hard to discern rocks. Yet the source metal image is lit from the opposite side on the ground, and is throwing off a shadow in the direction of its light source...consistency is as important as making your image light enough to be seen. Thanks so much MossyB. I did not realize that my image was that dark, it is my monitor, that sends me the wrong brightness... I made the rocks/background lighter, as for the source metal image, I flipped it. Hope the image looks better now. Reply »

Cool image, author, I like your buildings, the dome and use of the source on the other elements. However, the huge piece of the source looks like it was just kind of put into the image, and yes, the shadow is off. (They are so tricky and difficult to get, I know!) See the softness of the shadow from the rocks, and how it's very light - try to match that with the source's shadow - very light and blurred. Also, to 'ground' it, try erasing part of the lower side with a soft eraser, and it will look partially submerged in the sand. As far as the darkness now, it has a nice sci-fi feel. Reply »
