Meerkat Picture

Winning entry, with a score of:

Contest goal:

This is one to have fun with. Take a photo of anything wild....wild flowers, wild animals (no cats and dogs, please), wild human behavior even. Yes, even those places or things that can only be described as wild! This one's wide open to your imagination. But anything not considered truly wild, in all senses of the word, will be off-theme. Go wild!

friiskiwi: Are photos of animals in Zoos on theme? ( 5 years and 2472 days ago )
Contest Moderator: Since it would be difficult to distinguish a shot taken from a zoo, as long as the image is of a "wild" animal it will be allowed. "This one's wide open to your imagination". ( 5 years and 2472 days ago )
kyricom: Personally, and this is just me, if it's obvious an animal is in a zoo I'm going to vote a little lower. Zoos are the antithesis of "wild" ( 5 years and 2468 days ago )
Wayne Cheah: kyricom. You are of course at full liberty to vote as you see fit. But just for discussion, I gather that when you say zoos are the antithesis of "wild", do you mean that though the animals kept therein are wild, the place itself, the zoo, is not wild, or not wild enough for you to consider photos taken there as off-theme? Then what would you consider a photo of a cobra taken at, say, a back garden of a house in, say, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. The cobra like its cousin in a zoo is certainly wild, but the back garden, like a zoo, is not "wild" ( 5 years and 2468 days ago )
solkee: A cobra in a back garden in Sydney, Australia sure would be wild since they are not native to Australia. ( 5 years and 2468 days ago )
UncleJimmy: I see your point Kyricom, if it's 'obvious' they were taken in a zoo, I can see voting lower as per your tastes... IMHO, that would also indicate a careless snap and I would also vote lower too...the "Best" zoo photos are those in which the photographer was diligent enough to ensure it's not that obvious it was taken in a zoo...with the fences, crowds and other obstacles, it's certainly a challenge to make a really great 'zoo' photo. The meerkat or suricate, Suricata suricatta, is a small mammal belonging to the mongoose family. Meerkats live in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola, and in South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang" or "clan". A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats, but some super-families have 50 or more members. In captivity, meerkats have an average life span of 12–14 years, and about half this in the wild. (5 years and 2469 days ago)

In the U.S., they range primarily to the west of the Mississippi River, though they have also been introduced in a few eastern locales. They are herbivorous. (5 years and 2469 days ago)
