friiskiwi: Would sillhouettes be considered on theme, or should there be detail in the back lit subject?
(1 year and 185 days ago) Contest Moderator: As I read the contest guidelines, the only things prohibited are plants and flowers. As silhouettes are backlit...I believe they should qualify. I would however, recommend the members attempt to add some detail in their shots, as those entries will probably gain higher scores, being a more challenging photo... (1 year and 185 days ago)
LauraM: Is a tree considered a plant?
'cause I just realized that was the entry that I had given. Sorry, I can delete it if I'm wrong.
(1 year and 185 days ago) MossyB: Well a tree isn't an animal or mineral. I think it's a plant...
(1 year and 185 days ago) MossyB: For a silhouette to be considered on theme, the "primary light source" needs to be BEHIND IT. Just having something silhouetted against a light background is NOT having the primary light source behind it.
"In photography, when foreground objects are shot with a hot light source in the background, the objects become dark shadows."
"Backlighting refers to the process of illuminating the subject from the back. In other words, the lighting instrument and the viewer are facing towards each other, with the subject in between."
The key point is that the subject is BETWEEN the light source and the camera. Anything else may be a silhouette, but it is NOT backlighting.

(1 year and 184 days ago) Contest Moderator: People...NO PLANTS OR FLOWERS AS THE SUBJECT!!!!! Please read the contest rules BEFORE submitting your entries...In 24 hours I have removed 8 entries that are plants or flowers. Trees ARE plants, so, backlit or not they will be removed. jerostone: Ok, one other thing now; what if the source of light, albeit behind the object, is placed a bit to the side of it and out of sight? Also, can we use two sources of light? Thank you.
(1 year and 184 days ago) Contest Moderator: You may use 2 sources of light to fill in shadow detail, however, the primary (brightest) source Must come from behind the subject (1 year and 184 days ago)
