50. Old, bare, and shocked

Contest goal:
Some trees grow hundreds of feet tall, while others are much more average. But if we use the right perspective, we can make those small trees look like Giant Redwoods. Take a photo of a tree from the very bottom of the base, looking upward. Lie on the ground under the tree, sit under the tree or even stand under the tree, but make sure you look straight up into the tree to take the photo.

49. I’m coming guys… soon…

Contest goal:
We’ve been taking photographs for over 150 years. They are a record which allows people to see into the past. And, the past can be five minutes ago, too. Taking a picture of a picture can be tricky… so, let’s see your take on this. Your task is to choose your favorite photo, put it in a frame with glass and snap it in an interesting manner… But, we must see the picture in the frame very clearly: no reflections or glare.

46. Panoramic wheel

Contest goal:
The sights, sounds, smells and of course the rides. We all love to go to amusement parks. Whether it’s a small traveling carnival, or a major tourist attraction, we all love to go and forget our daily life once in a while. Zipping down a roller coaster, or throwing balls at a stack of bottles can bring a grin to folks of all ages. For this contest, show us your best photos from theme parks, amusement parks, (Disneyland, 6 flags, local theme park, etc.), or carnivals. It should be obvious that the photo was taken in any one of these. e.g. People on rides, people playing games for giant stuffed animals, or other photographic opportunities. People in the shot are optional, but it must be obvious it’s in an amusement park. Good luck!

45. So lonely…

Contest goal:
We’ve had several ‘Quote Theme’ contests in the past. This might be a unique take for a photography theme – instead of a famous quote, we’ll use famous lyrics from a song. For this contest, you are to take the first two lines from Nine Inch Nails’ song “Hurt”, and take a photograph representing your interpretation of it. “I hurt myself today. To see if I still feel. I focus on the pain. The only thing that’s real” If you are not familiar with this song you can go to the Hurt Music Video and maybe listening to it will inspire you. Take these lyrics and interpret them through photography. Pain, suffering, depression and self-misery should be the focus of the theme. If the image does not depict any kind of sadness or sorrow by obvious interpretation, please give a description. You must have at least 1 person in the photo showing facial expression.

44. April 18, 2010

Contest goal:
EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it! Some people say newspapers are dying, but are desire for news certainly isn’t. Even if newspapers do go extinct, we’ve invented many ways to fill the void. One thing we always seem interested in seeing are photos that go with the news. For this theme, post a newsworthy picture. Think news break! Catch something that would be interesting as information. This could be a natural disaster, a celebrity, an important event in your town, an historical moment, or a sporting event. Anything as long as it says journalism! The catch is that you MUST include the picture’s headline in your description. If you want to report the news as well, go for it, but the headline is required!

43. So close

Contest goal:
Good photos are like good jokes. If you have to explain it, it just isn’t that good. Sometimes it is interesting to hear the story behind the photo, and you see the photo in a new light, but in most cases a good photo shouldn’t need an explanation. It should speak for itself. The goal of this contest is to show us a photograph which tells a story. Maybe a dog waiting for his master or a child who got bruised after being too active on the playground… To make sure you’re on theme, please make sure to read about it HERE. This tutorial will give you more details on how to take shots that appear to have a story behind it.

27. backside

Contest goal:
There are many elements that go into making a good photo… the subject, focus, composition, background and others. This contest is going to emphasize an often neglected aspect of photography, the background. Backgrounds can be used to compliment the entire result, or to draw attention to certain aspects of the subject. Some backgrounds can even be distracting and lower viewers’ opinions. This contest will emphasize a background which draws attention to the subject. You have to take a picture of static object (fruits, plants,… etc.) on an entirely black background. The only colors should be that of the subject, and the solid black background. A little post editing on the ‘Background Only’ is allowed, but the shot should have been taken on a black background in the first place, so the post edit should be levels contrast curves etc…..no more! Good luck!

Contest goal:
We seem to naturally package things in sixes – beer, eggs, muscle car carburetors, or for some of us – our abs. But, this has nothing to do with muscles… sorry guys and gals with flat bellies. This is about something which is packaged in 6… like 6 eggs, 6 cigars, etc. The rules are that the subjects of the photo should be 6 in number, should be packed, and should be countable so that we will be sure that it is a ‘6 pack.’

7. Evolution…

Contest goal:
‘Time waits for no man.’ And humans use that time to progress. We love to see what’s in grandma’s trunk in the attic, but we use the most modern technology to record and talk about it. If something is old enough, it’s worth a lot. And, if something’s new enough, it’s worth a lot. Take a picture that includes both past and present. Whether you shoot an old building right next door to a super modern one, or an elder holding a baby, it does not matter. The important thing is that the picture should include something old or classical with something new or modern in the same shot.

5. King’s College Chapel

Contest goal:
When we’re inside, most of us don’t bother to look up. But if we did, we might see some amazing things covering our heads. There might be a glass ceiling, a boat’s ceiling or other unexpected forms. Your job in this contest is simple. Find an unusual ceiling and take a shot of it. You can shoot any ceiling other than brick. Good luck! For reference, this might help clarify the guidelines here: A ceiling is an overhead interior surface that bounds (“ceils”) the upper limit of a room. It is generally not a structural element, but a finished surface concealing the underside of the floor or roof structure above.

Pick whatever subject you like, as long as it expresses ‘the last’, not ‘the first’. Your photo should not need additional explanation for understanding it, it must be very clear from the photo itself, but to be safe, mention in your description what it represents. Good luck!
