I like where you're going with this. I think while you check the size of his head on those shoulders would be a good time to smudge tool the ends of his hair. Right where the hair meets that robe, if you will. Maybe just a little more "crackle" in the paint would add some 17th century look to it... just my 2 cents worth. Great idea!

This is a well put together chop, lots of imagination and work put into it. Be that as it may, there is something about the shadows bothering me. Specifically the tones and consistency. It seems to me that those gun turrets, the ropes from the balloons, and the side of the ship need some shading. Also, I'd think there would be some shadows cast onto the fog from the different elements in the scene.
I like the mood you're trying to set, a few tweaks would bring it over the top IMHO.

My only suggestion would be to try and soften the edges of the sack. Try a soft brush and the blur tool.

Maybe a step by step would help. I don't know, maybe create your background of Clock gears and such and then place the hour glass over it and then warp on the background in the area of the glass. Sort of like where the black in the original hourglass source is. BTW two of your source links lead to the same image.

This is an interesting interpretation on the contest theme. I like where you are going with this.

In MHO i think you could fix the shadows where the hand makes contact with the letter and where the letter is entering that slot. Maybe the tone/density of the shadow around those points might help. Just seems a little flat at the afore mentioned places. Pretty cool though.
