What happened in the night at the museum of Culture? How the hell is the wine bottle in the hand of Popeye?
NOTICE: I didn't put the explanation about this scene, so maybe people will misunderstand. This is the scene in the Museum, inside a glass room, with different layers. Near the glass is the boat and Popeye (made from hard papers). Around him is many layers of waves. The farthest one is the wall which is painted the homestead. In front of the wall is Olivia (printed on hard paper, too). Only the wine bottle is the strange thing. If you watch the movie "Night at the museum", you can imagine what happened ;).
Except the 6 sources, I drew the two characters (no copyright violation, I think). See the details in SBS and please consider the Hi-Res before voting. Have fun :D

Here is the reference for Popeye: http://anilame0y.deviantart.com/art/Popeye-127835646
and for Oyl: http://blathering.deviantart.com/art/Olive-Oyl-and-Bluto-19089728
They are copyrighted images but I didn't copy or trace them, just for studying the looks of the characters. (5 years and 3467 days ago)

cartoon characters are not allowed i think even if you draw them they're still copyrighted (from what i've learned in law subjects in college hehe)...need second opinion on this though.

author says:

I read that one in the guide: Actual copyrighted images or characters should not be used to create an entry. You may create an image in parody of a copyrighted character as long as the actual copyrighted art of the image is not used to create the entry. You may use the contest source or create the character by original means or with other sources. The character must be shown in a positive manner and not be seen to endorse, promote or suggest the use of any product or negative behavior of any kind.

author says:

If the copyrighted characters can't be used, how about some sources with the captured images of the character and we still use them? The dwarf from Walt Disney, for example?

avatar iquraishi
iquraishi says:

I don't want to debate u author, but in this source combos entries we are not allowed to use the external resources.." Every source picture has to be visible in your SBS guide and you can use no other external source image." I hope you take my point in positive way.. by the way nice idea.. y don't you draw the characters out of your imagination.. it'll be good for you as well.. I m saying because one of my entries was pulled out because I used a disney copyrighted character.. so I don't want the same to happen with your entry its really cool one..

author says:

I understand that and no external source was used in my entry (source is different from resource) and I made the character by my imagination. It depends on the mod because the paragraph I mentioned says that I can create an image in parody of a copyrighted character as long as the actual copyrighted art of the image is not used to create the entry. I will replace them by my original characters if requested by mod

alright.. that's cool..

thanks for clearing that up...i'm just about a month in this site so i'm quite new too. good image author... there might be issues w/ sizes and perspective but hey this is a cartoon parody

sad thing is...the hero now exchange his veggies for booze!

As I understood, except the wine bottle, all the rest is part of a painting, right? So, if you put the same effect (canvas) on the rest - Popeye, Olivia, boat and sea -, how would it be? Only a suggestion...

author says:

Maybe it's not easy to imagine this scene without my description. This is a glass room, exhibiting the mixed media, so it has a depth. The homestead is painted on the wall behind. The image of Olivia is put in front of this wall. Different layers of waves are between the wall and the boat of Popeye. The images of Popeye and Olivia are flat. So most of them are from paper, except the bottle and the painting.

OMG author ... take what people are saying and stop arguing,
the work is well done, if you drew the characters yourself then they are usable.. BUT you need to post source links that you used for reference

author says:

I'm sorry, I didn't argue, I just wanted to make something clearer. How can I show the reference, any of Popeye images? Because I just drew them as I imagine (of course, after looking many images of them to find out how I can draw). Moreover, in the guideline, no artwork or illustration, painting can be used as the reference. I'm confusing...

avatar DigitalDreamer

you still need to post the sources that you used for refrence, you know what parody means? It's fine that you drew them, but you still used someone elses art work as a refrence guide which should be stated from who. If you don't understand, you should always ask a mod before you post an image such as this. They always answer back as quickly as they can by the time the contest ends. You can put your image up but not publish it. Apart from the drawings being good, oyl looks like she's floating in mid air. Sun shine is pretty good luck.

author says:

Thank you for your comment, DD. I red flag and send message to mod some hours ago but I didn't get any response. I can provide any image as the reference but the problem is it conflicts with the guideline (no ARTWORK or PAINTING can be used as the reference). I don't know what to do until mod contacts me. About oyl, what you observed is right because I made her like that. Did you see a stick under her feet? As I explained in description, they just put her in front of the wall for exhibition. Moreover, the "sun shine" is the glass reflection (transparent glass). I provided 2 references, don't know that they are acceptable or not

avatar DigitalDreamer

oh hehe I see what you mean about the glass, I understand your frustraion it is a bit confusing I was only hoping to help ya out with hoping the mods would be able to help you out. I am horrible about looking over sbs and descriptions sometimes. I apologize about that. I really liked the effect and it's nicely done overall. Just was worried for your benifit good luck.

avatar puppetized

since the 1rst january 2009 popeye is no longer copyrighted,it belongs to the public domain in most country of the world ,except for the USA

avatar erikuri
erikuri says:

Ah, now I understood... Popeye's scene is inside a glass dome, in the middle of the room (for ex.)! If you had put a frame on the painting, maybe it would be less "confusing"... But it's ok, your work is nice!

avatar Drivenslush

this is an extremely well done and thought out piece.. crossing my fingers for you author... hope it doesn't get pulled.. it would be a shame

author says:

puppetized, how can I give you more than one golden medal , I really really appreciate your information ^^. Thank you ricky777, iquraishi, JellopuddingDD, erikuri, and Drivenslush, now I'm stop worring about this entry (I was difficult to sleep last night ). Have a nice weekend, my friends ^^!

author says:

Thanks Nator, it's not the problem in making original character but my idea is about an cultural exhibition and it should be something we've already known. If I make my own character, it needs more explanations. You see, even with Popeye, there are something in this photo can be misunderstood....
