Contest goal:
Imagine you are working for your local newspaper and are asked to go out on an assignment. Your assignment is to take a high quality photo of a local bar. There is controversy over the smoking laws in the bars and the newspaper is running an article about the pros and cons of smoking in bars. The photo must be taken at night and it must be taken from outside the bar. You may show the inside, but you also must be able to tell that the picture is taken from the outside. The focus cannot be of the bar's sign because the newspaper doesn't want to promote a particular bar, but the sign can be in the photo.
Connecting buildings can be in a very small part of the photo but is not recommended. The newspaper wants the focus to be on the bar, not other surrounding businesses. A good example of a photo the newspaper is looking for is of a man smoking a cigarrette just outside the door while looking through the window wanting to be inside with his friends.
VOTERS: please take into consideration the ASSIGNMENT and whether the entry meets this criteria. Just because it looks like a cool picture, doesn't mean you should vote high on this one---this one is about following the directions of the theme and being a quality photo.

locksmagic: "Your assignment is to take a high quality photo of a local bar." There doesn't necessarily need to be a smoker. The way I read it the subject is the bar itself. I would have to assume that is it anyway since in k5683's state you can't even be within 50 feet of a bar while smoking. ( 5 years and 2921 days ago )

k5683: Some of us would like to actually get paid for what we do right? What if a local newspaper asked you to go out and take a picture for their newspaper for $50? You'd have to be able to follow the directions to the tee. The whole "controversy" was just part of the scenario, just like the newspaper sending you out on an assignment. I was trying to give you a mental picture there ya know! NIGHT, OUTSIDE, FOCUS ON BAR (not their sign or surrounding buildings) Those are the musts. I just gave an example of the man outside smoking to help you out as to what the "newspaper" would think would be a great picture...it was just an idea, not the criteria. Like I said, this has to do with following directions---clear your cloudy head and focus for a minute!

k5683: NO, I suggested this for the pure fact that so many people don't follow the goal description like they are supposed to because they don't read it...or they just look at the thumbnail picture. If we worked for a company, we would have to follow directions specifically to be successful in photography. I think it is awesome too that Mr. Monty made this contest so that the full rewards would go to the winner because that sort of reiterates the whole idea behind this.

English is my second language and I'm lucky that the Mods are patient with me when I make my contest suggestions, and quite often they change my wording to make the suggestion better. Last night I went out to get photos for this contest and had a hard time because either people got upset because they thought I was with the newspaper trying to get pictures of them at the bar, or they just didn't seem natural. Tonight, in a different town, I stood farther back and zoomed in more so I was a little more inconspicuous. After 10 minutes or so, this guy walks up to me and asks me what I was taking pictures for. I gladly told him for contest at a site called pxleyes. He went on to explain that he was taking photos for the event across the street and saw me "over there" taking pictures and was curious. After our conversation, he shook my hand and then went over to take a cigarrette break and that is when I got this picture. Thanks fellow photographer! And we just might have a new pxl member soon if he checks pxleyes out like I suggested he do. (5 years and 2914 days ago)

Wonderful shot, and I love the fact that the person with least movement is the waitress, haven't we all been there.
lol Friiskiwi you have a keen eye but that "waitress" is the wife of a Lebanese dignitary who happens to live in my area, they own this particular bar and most of the rest of this city. I was being paid to take shots of this bar with her in them. Gotta love politics. This is one of the creative shots that I kept for myself
