good vs evil

step 1 of 14

First I just used the elliptical marquee tool as well as the pen, to get the general positions of the girls and slapped a gradient over them.

Then I added the hair and their dresses using the pen tool, and gradients in the layer styles menu. I also painted in the background, but that was just a place holder for now.

Next the eyes and mouths.

Next I gave their hair some texture. To achieve this I used some render fibers, then warped them to flow with the shape of the hair. Then I ALT clicked between the layers to create a clipping mask. I did the same for the red dress, but I used the render fibers, then the cut out filter, and then ink outline, then unsharp mask to make that texture. Also I used the pen tool to give the evil girl a bunch of tiny teeth.

For the good girls dress I once again started with render fibers, then the ripple filter, then emboss, and then crome. Then just like the hair I free transform warped it to fit the flow of the dress. Then I set the layer to overlay. For the skin I used render clouds, then colored pencil, paint daubs, then grain, unsharp mask, and some work with brightness contrast. then I clone stamped out a few dark spots to even it out a bit. Then I set the layer to soft light and put it over their skin.

Next with the pan tool I made hands and feet for the evil girl, and started work with paint on their hair, and faces.

step 7 of 14

More painting, mostly with a small soft brush. For the freckles I used a hard round brush.

step 8 of 14

Then I spent a long time reworking the eyes, lots of layers and lots of layer styles!

step 9 of 14

More shading and color, and feet for the good girl were added. And for a minute there the bad girl was going to have a water balloon. But that changed later.

step 10 of 14

Next I started to create the butterfly. So far its just the pen tool, then made selection, then applied some layer styles.

Then more detail with the pen tool.

Creation of Evil on the Playground: Step 11

step 12 of 14

Then I applied several layer styles to the detail layer. On a new layer with a hard round brush I painted in some dots, then added some layer styles to those as well.

step 13 of 14

Then I used that piece of wing to create the smaller piece of wing, then merged those and made the other wing. I skewed that a bit so the butterfly wouldn't look flat. Then made the dodge balls. Just the elliptical marquee tool, layer styles and some layers of paint. Then I put the butterfly on the ball.

step 14 of 14

Finally I put in the background. I took the picture of the playground and duplicated it. Then blurred the image and erased the ground part so the mulch closest to us would still be focused. Then duplicated the blurred layer and used the cutout filter and then the surface blur filter, then I lowered the opacity of that layer. Also, I forgot to mention that some where in there I used the smudge tool to give the hair more detail. After that just several minor details like last minute shading and adjustments and it was finished!
