I am new here and am having problems learning your procedures. Please have patience. I was striving for simplicity here. No outside sources used. I used muted colors for mouth and eyes.

I will put steps here as site will not allow me to put in steps without pictures.

1. Cut out lady and put on seperate layer.

2. Remove stains using spot heal brush and patch tool.

3. Smart blur lady.. radious 2.1, threshold 20

4. Levels adju: 8,1,169

5. Hue/sat adjust. check colorize, 34,53,0

6. Image-adjustment-equalize.

7.Tweak hair with mixer brush tool size 6 px then 4px.

8. Airbrush face 50%

9. Use blur tool to blur out sharper shadows on neck.

10.Neck and chest skin airbrush 33% theen 68%.

11. Cutout dress seperate layer. Color #0b4312.

12.Eyes and mouth seperate layers color then lower opacity. Soften nose with blur tool.

13. final run blur tool over sharpoer shadows to tone down. Touch up spots on dress with spot healing tool. Blur tool to soften shadows on ear.

Good blend, but some edges of the added figure are blurry, and the head is distorted.

author says:

i tried bit and about head is distorted yes i wantedly did to match rest

CMYK46 says:

You wanted to match what? The head of the Gandhi statue isn't distorted. If you want to resize an image, hold down the shift key when scaling.

I agree with CMYK46 - clean up the edges, maybe a little DOF to sway attention away from the pixelated photo, and you've got yourself a good chop!

thanks jamesD u always rit

I like the concept here, has a nice flow to it. Check your masking/blending some, other than that it's good stuff.

No external sources used. I mainly used stamp tool. Seperate layers for eyes, ear, and mouth and blouse. Colored these as seperate layers then adjusted opacity. I was trying to bring the statue to life. Airbrush was helpfull on facial areas. The subjects hair was the most difficult to work with, I ended up with a sort of punky blond hair effect. Fun experiment.

For the background:

Duplicate original picture
Choose the duplicated layer.
Change it to Exclusion blending mode.
Use levels to adjust.
You will see that the light and dark backgrounds are reversed and they are more blue than before.
Merge the layers or take a snapshot then continue modifying the picture (5 years and 2254 days ago)

Not bad, but look at the lighting on the source pic & adjust your shadows accordingly. You might consider reducing the amount of empty space around the figure, too.

author says:

This was my first contest entry. Glad I checked my messages as it mysteriously disappeared. As I said in my original comment, I used no external sources. The background is just the background of the original picture we were given to work with. I may have touched up some of the scratches on the original background using the clone stamp tools.

The frame around the subject was done making a simple square and applying the gradient tool. Then cutting out a circle with the eliptical selection tool.

author says:

Ok, On second thought I see the differences in the background. I am trying to recreate how that was done and the only thing I can figure out is:

Duplicate original picture
Choose the duplicated layer.
Change it to Exclusion blending mode.
Use levels to adjust.
You will see that the light and dark backgrounds are reversed and they are more blue than before.
Merge the layers or take a snapshot then continue modifying the picture.

nice gold effect , suggestion: soften the edge and if the bkgd is different color the golden statue should stand out more IMO. good luck
