u r greatly right.., but the rule is.., the entry must use the image source...
not just 3d image.., even photo / 2d image can be make without the need of the image source like theme photoshop contest.., am me right..?.., me am sorry if me am wrong...
about minimal use of the image source.., consider the use of very minimal use of the source at the great beautiful image of the 2nd winner of the Cross photoshop contest...

Here I used photo filters to match the colors of both pictures. Next I blended the two pictures together. I used transform to match up the pictures, and I earsed all the unwanted parts. My final touch was a texture. (5 years and 3225 days ago)
