Wooden boats can be invaded and destroyed by these ship worms, called teredos, if you do not use a special paint to keep them from entering the hull. They are very small at first, but as they eat their way back and forth, never breaking the surface of the wood, they get larger and their tunnels leave a honeycomb of destruction.
