kyricom: OK, MnMCarta, here we go... (all you super photogs can feel free to correct me). Basically, you have your subject (whatever it is you took a picture of), where the eye is drawn - this is your "positive space." Everything that isn't positive space (the subject) is negative space. Generally, when speaking of negative space, you should keep DOF in mind. The negative space will emphasize the positive space, so if everything is in the same focus the emphasis is less (although not impossible). If you have a deep DOF and the rest of the shot is out of focus, or a single color background, or nice bokeh etc. it will emphasize the positive (subject) more. You could contrast the negative to the positive, blend or compliment the negative to the positive, and anything else that comes to mind (Might be good to keep the rule of thirds in mind too).
