A Work in Progress: Flower Power

This guide was made for entry:
Flower Power

mini cooper

step 1 of 7

Okay, so the mini cooper had lots of bad normals. But this is easy to correct in Max. Simply select the object that has the bad normals (wheel, tyres, etc) Go to the sub-object level select all the poly's then click on the "Unify" button under the normals panel. Had the normals all corrected within 5 mins of importing the object file.

step 2 of 7

Created the surf boards in 3dsd max by squashing a sliced cylinder. Then using the FFD modifier to shape. Added a turbosmooth.

Creation of Flower Power: Step 2

step 3 of 7

This is the export selection option. As I was constructing the image in Vue 9, I wanted to export as an .obj file.

Creation of Flower Power: Step 3

step 4 of 7

Here you can see I've chosen the "VUE" preset export option. Preserved the UV's and kept the faces as quads.

Creation of Flower Power: Step 4

step 5 of 7

Okay, so now in VUE I imported the corrected min model. Because VUE understands .obj files really well, it enables me to texture all the individual sub models with their own material no problem. The flower power material was applied to the mini body with the object set to parametric.

Creation of Flower Power: Step 5

step 6 of 7

VUE takes a lot longer than 3ds max to render a decent image so I chose to go for a fairly small render but retain quality. Plus I wanted the image to be up by the deadline.

Creation of Flower Power: Step 6

step 7 of 7

The clouds were added to a Global Radiance atmosphere I created with more accurate glow intensity and lighting characteristics. I chose 2 layers of clouds for this image.
