step 1 of 6

Block in rough shapes and colors, on neutral background. I work on only one layer, primarily with the marker tool.

step 2 of 6

Smoothing colors, and getting better shapes going on. The face and arm/hand are the two areas I really want to emphasize, so the most detail and clearest lines will go there.

Continuing with the detail

Darkening colors and working on his eyes.

There is greater contrast, and the most detail in this step, which is essentially the complete, but not yet final image, as the colors are rather soft and dull.

step 6 of 6

This is the final piece, in which I kicked up the brilliancy of the colors, to give his face a fleshier, healthier, and warmer feel.
