step 1 of 18

I began by placing parts of the shell over the resource image, warping and liquifying to fit.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 1

step 2 of 18

I made copies of the back feathers, layering them on top of each other. I adjusted the color by using the brightness/contrast sliders, making the feathers appear darker and redder. I added depth by using a levels adjustment layer and a brightness/contrast adjustment layer.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 2

step 3 of 18

Using color adjustment and brightness/contrast, I changed the source part to a dark blue. I then layered the part for the blue breast feathers and warped it for the tail feathers.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 3

step 4 of 18

I darkened a piece of the source for the leg feathers, warped and liquified another piece of source for the legs and used smudge at a high strength on another piece for the down feathers.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 4

step 5 of 18

I smudged the neck feathers and used levels adjustment layers to add shadow and highlights.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 5

step 6 of 18

I liquified the source to make the hen's tail feathers. TIP: Ready to start on another section of your image, but still not quite sure you want to flatten the part you just completed? Group the layers together by clicking on the file folder icon at the bottom of your layers window and drag the layers into it. Then hide the folder. That way, you'll have an empty canvas to work on while still being able to go back later and change the layers in the folder if you want to.

Warp and layers

Creation of Family Outing: Step 7

step 8 of 18

Warp, transform and layers. I also used the burn tool to add some shading under the small back feathers and borrowed a tail feather for the wing.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 8

step 9 of 18

I placed the parts for the neck and breast feathers and darkened the back feather to add to the tail.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 9

step 10 of 18

More warp and liquify for the hen's face.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 10

step 11 of 18

The hen's feet.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 11

step 12 of 18

The hen was giving me some trouble, so I decided to work on the chicks, hiding the hen layers in a group folder. For the chick's legs and beak, I borrowed the parts I used to create the hen's beak and legs. I used the burn tool to make the eye.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 12

step 13 of 18

Color balance adjustment layer to make it a little more yellow and brightness/contrast to bring the color out more. Then light and dark levels adjustment layers for shading. I shifted the leg on one of the chicks and warped the parts on the other to make it look to the side. I used brightness/contrast to darken the back chick.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 13

step 14 of 18

Back to the hen. I used light and dark level adjustment layers for the shading. I also used a mask on the back neck feathers to make the strands. A strong smudge on the neck feathers and to draw out the breast feathers on the sides.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 14

step 15 of 18

I stretched out the sky from the source image and then cloned in the empty spaces.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 15

step 16 of 18

I used the background from the rooster resource image, duplicating it and then blending and filling in the empty spaces with the clone tool.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 16

step 17 of 18

I made the shadows by making a copy of the object, opening the levels control and pushing the sliders all the way to the left, effectively making the copy black. I then used distort to flatten the copy.

Creation of Family Outing: Step 17

step 18 of 18

Gausssian blur on the shadows and the clone tool to draw up some grasses in front of the shadows and birds. I also flipped the background because I thought it looked better.
