First make a copy of the original picture. I always do this.

Second, I went to Hue/Saturation to desaturate and lightly darken.

Third, I used levels to get the lighting to the level I wanted.
step 4 of 4
Finally, I used Shadows/Highlights to give the picture a more gritty look. Very simple.
