Scanned in my sketch of the apple, and created basic outlines.

Filled in outlines and merged shapes to create one.

Chose a darker red for the base color and added in a lighter red using a gradient mesh. Used pen tool to create highlight and dropped opacity.

Added in leaf and stem using pen tool and simple gradients.

Began to build tower.

Continued to layer apples to build tower.

Finished tower and added extra leaves and a stem to make the top.

Simple radial gradient background.

Simple gradient for grass and a few shadows, and voila!
