how did you get such good UV's for the fur map? did you have to paint out the fur in PS and then apply the depth of field pass including the Fur. What render layers did you render out to get the short depth of field and fuzzy feel to the image. Can you add a snapshot of your UV's to show how you controlled the fur, because the image is awesome, but I think people need to know how you did it.

The only way I know is either particle based, but you would have to render seperate and composite or in MAYA there are paint effects you could use, I am not sure MAX has the same tools.

nice Fur and modeling. to create a great helmet. I would suggest some simple dirt maps apllied to your various shaders to give a little real world variation to the specular, reflection and diffuse attributes. will make the image much more real. also conect an ambient occlosion node to the diffuse attribute of the floor and helmet shaders and it will ground the helmet better. All in all nice helmet though.
