Contest goal:

Some months ago we had a new type of contest that many members seemed to like. This contest was based on using a new website we found called PixelSquid.
This is a site offering a library of high quality 3D objects that can be rotated to the desired position and downloaded as a PSD or PNG file for use in Photoshop. (There is also a free plug-in offered but only for use in CC2014 and later versions of Photoshop which allows you to spin the objects directly in Photoshop).

These objects can't be used in a regular PS contest since they are 3D renders which aren't allowed so it's been decided we will have a Special Contest just for the use of PixelSquid. Joining the site is free as are the objects to download. You can learn all about PixelSquid from the link provided.

For this Special Contest you are to use at least three objects from PixelSquid which you can combine with sources that you normally use in a regular PS contest and create an animated gif out of it. You can create any scene you wish, there are no limits, so use your imagination and take advantage of the great 3D objects from PixelSquid to create your entry. Remember to provide links for all objects and sources used, an SBS would be especially good to have for this contest but isn't mandatory.

Your animation has to be at least 5 seconds long.

Status: finished. Check out the winners below!

skyangel: Could you please give us a recommended frame size (Pixel height and width) as well as a recommended amount of frames for a 5 second animation so we don't go over the upload limit?

lchappell: skyangel, try to set up for a 30 frame per second (FPS) rate. 5 sec.= 150 frames.

robvdn: A recommended size is hard to give, it depends on many factors; like length, colors, movement and so on. Personally I'd keep it between 600x600 or so, but while saving your animation in PS you can always adjust the output size.
http://photoshopanimation.com/2014/photoshop-frame-rate-essentials/ will give you an indication of the frame rate you'll need. ( 5 years and 937 days ago )
Contest Moderator: DUE TO THE FACT THAT PIXELSQUID SUDDENLY TURNED INTO A PAID SITE AND NO FREE OBJECTS CAN BE DOWNLOADED ANYMORE WE ARE FORCED TO CLOSE THIS CONTEST FOR NEW ENTRIES ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 21, 2016.
EVERYONE STILL WORKING ON AN ENTRY HAS TO ENTER BEFORE FRIDAY. ( 5 years and 923 days ago )
scratzilla1: Dear MOD: I am hoping to put an entry into this comp (time allowing) .. Could you please clarify one thing for me..
The Closing date FRIDAY OCTOBER 21, 2016. is timed in which country? Sorry to ask but this is a global site and Friday could be Saturday for me . thanks in advance. (Friday in US/Canada etc is Saturday in Tasmania/Australia) ( 5 years and 923 days ago )
skyangel: Since pixelsquid is turning into a paid site, could we use non pixelsquid 2D images in our animations instead or can we have a different animation contest which does not use 3D images at all? My version of photoshop would not rotate the 3D pixelsquid images anyway. It seems like only one entry so far actually has the image rotating in a 3D fashion. ( 5 years and 923 days ago )
spaceranger: The plug-in is only available for CC2014+ versions of Photoshop and it allows you to rotate the objects in PS but as it's explained on Pixelsquid, you can still rotate the objects on the site then download the PNG (even now with the watermark PNG) to check the position etc. then download the PSD or PNG file and place it in your PS document layer. If you're already a member you can get the first year membership for $20 with unlimited use. I'm disappointed that Pixelsquid didn't give any warning of their plans to charge a fee, not a nice way to treat the members IMO.
This contest was designed for use with Pixelsquid objects, to allow 2D sources wouldn't be fair to those entries that already exist and used the 3D objects. We will have other animation contests but while the situation is unfortunate I think this contest should finish as intended. ( 5 years and 923 days ago )
Contest Moderator: @Scratzilla1: the date given means this contest will be set to voting at the same time as the regular contests. I should have been clearer at that, sorry
That should mean that when the countdown is set to exactly 7 days left.
@skyangel: like spaceranger explains this contest is about Pixelsquid objects, opening it to all sources would be unfair to those who did enter already. And like spaceranger said also we'll have another animation contest at some point.
We do not like to take a decision like this but Pixelsquid turning paid only happened quit suddenly, not even Pixelsquid members got any warnings about this through their newsletters. We where surprised by this and felt we should make this decision. I believe this is the first time in PXL history we closed a contest earlier. ( 5 years and 923 days ago )
spaceranger: For information about the changes on Pixelsquid see this link: http://pixelsquid360.tumblr.com/post/151937851772/a-special-offer-from-pixelsquid#notes
You have until October 24, 2016 to take advantage of the special offer of $20 for the first year subscription. ( 5 years and 923 days ago )
skyangel: Fair enough but I am not sure if I will finish my entry in time. However, it is a good learning experience since I learned how to do animation in photoshop even if I don't submit an entry.
Thank you to all who gave tips and helpful advice for this contest. ( 5 years and 922 days ago )

Besides the sources used, I used only photoshop brushes to paint in the water and splashes on the fountain.I used sqirlz program to create the pond ripples. http://www.xiberpix.net/SqirlzReflect.html.
There are 80 frames in this animation.
The quality seems poor, I think because I lowered the settings to make the file approx 5mb.
How do some of you manage to get 150 frames in an animation and still end up with a final file of approx 5 mb?
This is the first animation I have ever done in photoshop so any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. (5 years and 920 days ago)
