I think we'll see some good entries here. (2 years and 168 days ago) RickLaMesa: here's a list..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fairy_tales (2 years and 165 days ago)
yahidithmonnalisa: um, as much as i like the entries, alice in wonderland is not a fairy tale, is a novel, written by Lewis Carroll... fairy tales are more like folk tales. but maybe i'm being a neatpicker (2 years and 165 days ago)
Keiley22: i thought a fairytale was something that someone made up... something that honestly could not come true and what better example than Alice in Wonderland... one of my favs. I have a cinderella book... over 400 pages, that is considered a fairtale. (2 years and 165 days ago)
kyricom: So far 75% of the entries are based on Alice in Wonderland - a novel with a lot of drug allusions written by the drug induced mind of Lewis Carroll. It would NOT generally be considered a fairy tale. Fairy tales, in the context of western culture are typically parables which include local myth and legend with fantastical creatures (witches, giants etc.) that often teach a lesson (e.g. hansel and Gretal - don't wander off into the woods, Cinderella - there's hope for a happy ending for all you lower class hard workers). yahidithmonnalisa: you explained it better, kyricom, thanks! (2 years and 164 days ago)
annabat: Though techincally Alice in wonderland is not a traditional fairy tale, and more of fantasy/satire. A Lot of elements that make a fairy tale are present. Much of the imagery used by Carroll is steeped in fokelore. I think the alice entries should stay. (2 years and 164 days ago)
yahidithmonnalisa: maybe i am being a purist, but a fairytale is the equivalent of the greeks "deux ex machina" where my magic or a power from above comes to rescue, or there is some sort of curse that needs to be broken, or something along those lines. novels and fables are not fairytales. i think the contest should be then, childrens stories, so anything would be a go. (2 years and 163 days ago)
yahidithmonnalisa: edit - not my magic! by magic....i don't have any powers, yet. (2 years and 163 days ago)
Drivenslush: shhhhhh yahidthmonnalisa... you were right the frist time.. I've seen your work... YOU DO HAVE MAGICAL POWERS... giggle snort (2 years and 162 days ago)
jawshoewhah: Other cultures seem to have other fairy tales. Although Kyricom, ahidithmonnalisa (that's a username I had to copy/paste) make a good point, other cultures have other fairytales that may not be well known. Is it fair to say it's not a fairytale that qualifies? I think as long as it is a work of fiction and and obvious fairy tale, even by description then it qualifies. Just my 2 cents.
