Called that, as it was the transition between the split rear window (older) body style and the newer oval rear window body style. VW was using up the last of the bodies made in that style, and unintentionally made a highly collectible one year only VW; half 1952, and half 1953... VW history 101..

Being a "bug-fan" I knew this one (trivia that is...) what a unique model year this was...too bad it wasn't in fully restored condition...I would have loved to see that! Nice find author. (Proud previous owner of a 1973 "Super" Beetle)
