A very small church way out in the rural countryside (5 years and 198 days ago)

Just love the dynamic tension that you have created with this well comoposed photograph. The smallness of the church to the vastness of land around it and the tonal colours make this image a stand out.

Thank you

Definitely tiny. Looks like it escaped being burned in a bush fire too.

author says:

That's just the color of the leafless brush. This was taken in the early winter after all the leaves had fallen.

Hi there....this image is all about visual weight, that which grabs our eyes, what we view the longest and most closely at...what steals the show. In my eyes, your gravestone on the left demands and gets attention. I feel just a tad of a smaller crop would have put more visual weight onto the church and less on the stone.

author says:

thanks olga for the insight,i like the balance between the main gravestone and church, both of which could be conceived as places of worship, but its good to another eye on this.

I agree with Olga. The gravestones make me think more of death than worship of any kind. The photo would fit better into a cemetery theme in my opinion. It has a sense of sadness about it. Maybe a shot of the church without so many graves around it would fit better into a "places of worship" theme? I don't know of any people that worship anything at gravestones.

author says:

Agree in principal with the comment,i suppose what I ment that have seen many people at different times at gravesides more so abroad where they sort of celebrate people that have passed away, sort of reminded me of some kind of worship, but I might be wrong and maybe it was a mistake putting this in..

I think this is a nice shot. I like the B&W, and don't really think a tighter crop would be better. The height of the grave stone on the left being near the height of the church not only balances the shot, but sends a subliminal message about life and death. How well it fits the theme is a separate issue from the quality of the photo. Personally, I think it fits the theme just fine. Many people pray at gravesides. What is praying? It's a form of worship. We can worship in a giant cathedral or mosque, or we can worship at a humble site in the country or the side of a grave.

author says:

thanks for that informative comment kyricom
