Those aren't bees---they are wasps!

They are not wasps. They are yellow jackets, in the bee family.

You are both correct, Yellow jacket is the common name in North America for predatory wasps. Members of these genera are known simply as "wasps" in other English-speaking countries.
I for one don't like them in my garden, have been stung too often.
Good photo though.

I'm not that technical about insect names, sorry!
Friskiwi, I don't mind them in my garder because it is not a common sight. Thanks for your comment about the photo

Up close and personal with POWER (5 years and 2499 days ago)

Interesting take on theme, the sign says "pesticide in use", but....you seem a relatively safe distance from the facility. And nearly all food producing farms do the same thing, all the produce you buy (99%) has been laced with pesticides...you still eat, right? Just an observation...

going back in for a closer shot

I would recommend that...remember, the images are being voted on by not only 'quality' but the perceived 'risk' in taking them...that is the contest.

Much better Author..NOW it looks like you took a larger 'risk' for the shot...comp and balance are good too, Good Luck!

I shot this photo while on vacation in Seluda, NC in 2007. I was trying to capture the mountains that are blurred in the background using the weeds as a frame and this once in a lifetime shot happened instead. These flowering weeds were growing all along the road and I do not know what they are called. (5 years and 2599 days ago)

I've always tried to get a bee this close up, but they always fly away before I could get the picture. Very nice!

author says:

I don't know what was up with this bee, but it sat there for ages, so I was able to focus properly.

Shooting at the level of the bees is something wrong for the knees ... at least for my old, old, knees ^_^ (5 years and 2789 days ago)

Impressive! They're not easy to capture. Especially, I imagine, while laying on your belly!
