These red thorns are galls.
The galls that develop on the leaves are formed by the plant in reaction to the attacks of parasites: the mites.
Mites produce a proliferation of fusiform prominences on the upper surface of the leaves; These green galls turn red at first. In autumn, the mites leave the galls to settle on the branches, under the bark or at the base of the buds where they spend the winter.
