kyricom: I dunno... seems like some are confusing being alone with lonely. Does just having a single person in the shot automatically fit the theme? ( 5 years and 2211 days ago )
Contest Moderator: Lonely: affected with, characterized by, or causing a depressing feeling of being alone.
Alone: separate, apart, or isolated from others.

This contest is about taking an image portraying loneliness, not just being alone. The image must have "an aura of loneliness and creates a feeling of emptiness".

We will try and be lenient but the image should portray some sadness as loneliness is a depressing feeling. ( 5 years and 2210 days ago )
friiskiwi: Many entries in this contest does not depict loneliness, and will hopefully be removed, but many of them do tell a story, so find a different title and enter them in 'A Photo Story'
good luck ( 5 years and 2209 days ago )
Artifakts: I really don't understand the way you removed an entry that even an other Mod (Friiskiwi) commented as "Nice take on the theme." !!! ...
( 5 years and 2209 days ago )
Chrys Rizzo: Many entries were removed because it was understood they are out of theme, but, in my humble point of view they are some other that are not the expression of loneliness. ( 5 years and 2209 days ago )
Artifakts: It seems that this contest is too subjective and can be interprated differently according to each and another. ( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
friiskiwi: Artifakts, it might surprise you, but I'm not always right. This is a very difficult contest. Very subjective. ( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
teecee: my entries were also removed without a chance to re submit with something a little lonlier or depressing
( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
Contest Moderator: I beg to differ teecee. You were given a warning and reuploaded the exact image again, it was therefore removed. Your other image removed was totally off theme and since it had extremely low votes it would have been unfair to the members who previously voted if you changed it. ( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
Chrys Rizzo: Here is realy very difficult to give a vote. According to the sensibility of each one the photo can or not represent loneliness. Some o them give all kind of feelings but not loneliness... I think each one has a different point of view, right or not, it's a point of view as feelings can be interpreted in different ways! GL to all ( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
jerostone: A girl walking by the edge of the water along an empty beach keeping her head low, looks more like a girl moving among a throng of commuters in a busy train station, so I guess the image should be removed, deemed off topic. Lovely! Just lovely! One last thing; how on earth a person with the hood of their windbreaker pull down their head and with their back turned on the camera convey a feeling of loneliness? ( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
Chrys Rizzo: With the photos I have:
- Connection with nature feeling
- Time for reflection feeling
- impression that the person is drunk
- Praying
- Resting
- Tourist looking at the scene
- Feelings of shame
- Feelings of tranquility
Few of them brings to me loneliness feelings... ok, my humble point of view... just learning each day! Good luck to all! ( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
BeSea: I think that you have opened a can of worms here for pulling so many saying that the person is not visibly depressed. This is only the first definition of the word. Many that are left are just simply alone, but not looking depressed to me either. There are other meanings of the word and I think that in this one the interpretation should have been left up to the authors.

World English Dictionary
lonely
1. unhappy as a result of being without the companionship of others: a lonely man
2. causing or resulting from the state of being alone: a lonely existence
3. isolated, unfrequented, or desolate
4. without companions; solitary

teecee: moving on...there are a lot of other contests ( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
teecee: I will probably get into trouble for this, but, for a site dedicated to the art of photography you seem to spend a lot of time determining what 's on theme and what isn't instead of how the art is being interpreted by voters. If people don't like something they don't have to vote for it, but, for that 1 person that does place a vote are they not validating someones entry? Are they saying that they are interpreting the photo as being on theme? Isnt that what art appreciation is all about? Individual interpretations?
( 5 years and 2208 days ago )
photogirl723: Teecee....you're right on, in my opinion. Also, I sometimes feel that photographs are judged more by being on theme than by their photographic merits.

This is way too much discussion about one theme. The bottom line, people contributing to a contest need to read the goal of the contest more thoroughly to understand the meaning. It seems many just glance at the title of the contest or quickly read through the goal, not reading it closely enough. I am guilty of trying my own interpretation of the goal only for my photos to be removed by the moderators, regardless of how others view them or how good they are photographically. All photography contests generally come down to how others interpret them, which can vary widely.

teecee: You are missing the point

meatman: This contest here is like a riddle wrapped up in an enigma surrounded by mystery and puzzlement and confusion. Now get yur loneliness on and get to capturing great images !!! ( 5 years and 2207 days ago )
BeSea: Personally, I like the narrowness of the themes because it hones your ability to interpret specific subjects accurately. I think the problem in this one has been that a subject based on a feeling has so many interpretations that it is impossible for the mods to be objective about it because they can only base their decisions on their own feelings. I think, to be fair, that those whose entries have been removed should be allowed to re-submit and allow the voters to say if it is on theme. What do you say, mods?
I would also like to give credit here to the mods and a thank you for their time and dedication to what is obviously a difficult job. It is impossible to please all of the people all of the time. ( 5 years and 2207 days ago )
Artifakts: You're right BeSea ... It's too subjective to fit everyones mind. That why I will not vote on this one because I don't agree with the choice of removing/not removing some entries. ( 5 years and 2204 days ago )
JannaR: I agree that the intangible idea of loneliness is completely subjective. What one sees/feels as loneliness, is another's contemplation, or peaceful solitude. That being the case, I've voted on the merit of the image. More for it's quality, than for the subjective thought of 'what defines loneliness'. ( 5 years and 2203 days ago )
