This is the story of how 3 'failed' chops come together and tell 1 story, unintended!
Let's start with the first:
I wanted to do something with the shield, so I started with a wooden background and added the shape of the shield to it. Added a rim to it.

Then took the emblem in the source and matched that in, used some blending modes to let the structure of the metal coming through.
So this was what I had in mind, but...

So back to the drawing board! New chop.
Let's try something with an old castle and the tent in it. To me this source is not telling me a lot to go with, something I need. The source has to tell me a story.

Let's try again, attempt 3.
Let's search for a source of a knight. Oww: it's a woman and she's dead! A female knight ?!? Jeanne D'Arc was a woman and she commanded the French army, so do not tell me there where no female knights!

I do have a nice place to put my shield now, at the her head. A bit like a tombstone!

Animals love dead people, don't they?
Do birds feed on them? Hmmm... O well, birds eat worms and dead bodies contain... you get the idea.

I forgot something... the lady is dead. But how, why?
Aha! There's a hole in her armor, an arrow should fit into that, and that explains why she is dead, right?

Where there's an arrow penetrating a living body there must be a wound, and where's a wound there's blood. And from that wound she died, lost a lot of blood.

Whoha! Wait a minute!
If there's one bird there's usually more, so let's add a second one.
But still, the image is empty and I have no clue where to go from here.

Playing around with also the 2nd failed chop I ended up with that 2nd one above the first one.
Hmmm, there's a story starting to emerge. What if the 2nd represents the woman knight preparing to go on a crusade in front of her Lords castle? A so called before and after?

A misty line makes the difference between today and tomorrow or if you like today and yesterday.
It looks nice to me :)
I have a story to tell but still there's at least 2 things wrong here:
1. the 2 shields are at the same place and at least one can go.
2. the before story is not complete yet.

Luckily I found another source image of the same woman as a knight AND she's even preparing AND she's looking down!
I can use her to cover up the shield, complement the 2nd chop AND make her look at herself, as if she foresees her future fate. PERFECT!

Chop finished!
But the colors are not how I like them yet. I want the top part show a bit of hope, she believes in her crusade so I want some warmer colors to express that hope and faith.
The bottom part is already colder in colors (even though the weather seems nicer) so no need to change that.
