To create the lightening I used the difference clouds method.
First make a selection with the rectangle marquee tool, and fill it with a white to black gradient.

The go to filter>render>difference clouds. Ensuring that your background and foreground colours are black and white.

Next go to image>adjustments>invert. To flip the black and white.

Using image>adjustments>levels. Move the left hand slider across to the right and you will begin to see lightening like shapes appear.

Next you need to get a paint brush set to black and get rid of any shapes you don't want by painting over them with a medium soft brush.

The last step is to set the blend mode of the lightening layer to "SCREEN" this will take all the black away and just leave the lightening strike. After that you can go to image>adjustments>hue and saturation. Make sure to check the "COLORIZE" box. You can now alter the lightenings color to suit your scene.
