With layering and the clone tool, its possible to take a small piece and make a varied looking background.

Placement of the wings and boy.

Using the boy as a template and pieces from the frog and turtle, I formed the body.

In shading, I used adjustment layers and color overlay.

Almost done. I tried different skies until I found one I was satisfied with. I also played with color adjustments, brightness/darkness, burn, dodge, ect. Some results I kept, some I didn't. You won't know if it'll work until you try it.

I used Levels and Exposure adjustment layers on the sky and a warm photo filter over the whole works. A few minor detail fixes and I'm done.
