the first step was to separate the turtle from the background using the pen tool.

Instead of using a second source img. I decided to try and make my own sand.
I created an empty layer then used the gradient tool.

I then copied the layer and used the grain filter on the sprinkle setting with med.high contrast

then I tried different blend modes and hue and saturation adjustments to get my working sand

the next step was to change the turtle. First I made a copy then I used the emboss filter and I'll use this layer to bring out the details when change the turtle to sand

now I'm ready to change the background and the turtle to sand. by changing them both together I can adjust the color so the turtle doesnt get lost in the background but still has the proper hue
I combined the layers from the previous steps to get the look I wanted

Next created two empty layers then used the burn tool to scuff the sand up around the turtle

The final step was to add shadows and use the burn tool to increase detail on the turtle
