step 1 of 6

Starting to make something more cylindrical for the spaceship. Just kinda winging it at this point, although the ship sort of nicely evolved on its own after I played with some of the engine parts, and deleted others.

step 2 of 6

Making the hull. Once I copied the top of the engine, flipped it, & merged it below, the ship was really born. I also added more round parts on the face of the rear segment, and started adding fuel tanks.

step 3 of 6

Adding what came to be portholes to the nose of the ship, and making the engine struts from the wheel drivers. The engines are made from the same cylinder as the fuel tanks. A lot of color matching, dodging & burning went on at this point. Some painting & texturing on the rear segment of the ship.

Exploded view of what's been going on.

step 5 of 6

Lots going on here: the tow cable was copied from a straight segment, duplicated many times, and distorted for perspective. Part of the rock pic was cropped as the asteroid. The ship's name was stenciled on, the radar dish was added, as were the red running lights. Glows were added to the portholes, and the rocket exhausts were painted in.

Here all the final color & highlight/shading tweaks were done, and the star field background added.
