Create planet surface

Using eliptical marquee tool select area for planet. Copy selection to another layer. Filter - Distort - Spherize

Create another "planet", fill with white, adjust opacity, add noise. Use smudge tool to create "flame" edge.

Create smoke effect. on a new layer with brush tool draw a line across workspace, use liquify and smudge tool to create smoke, duplicate layer & re-liquify/smudge. Change opacity to liking. Add gradient layer mask to blend.

Add planet layer with inner shadow, outer glow, inner glow.

Mask out everything but the tree from original source image

Mask out the sky & foreground, leaving only the mountain silhouette, Fill with black. Add inner glow, bevel and emboss.

Background created using black fill, noise, adjusting levels. Add stars using Render-Lens Flare
