okay so this is how I set up each of the objects to render for the final matte. I used Vue R10, with the ground plane removed. this helps with the alpha mask later. I used a Global radiosity atmosphere and placed the sun slightly behind and to the right, to correspond with the main light source in the final image. Of course depending on which side I wanted each object I could easily flip the rendered image.

So in photoshop I created the background, A blue layer of paint, a cloud image with lowered opacity and a spiral galaxy brush. Palyed with the setting to get the right feel for the galaxy/wormhole.

Here I have added the rendered objects. All rendered with an alpha mask to make cutting out much easier. Although the colours neeeded playing with as did the brightness/contrast.
