step 1 of 9

Cut out the face of the owl and resize to fit the face of the bear. Use the distance between two eyes of the bear as the standard to adjust the owl layer. Use soft eraser to clear gradually clear the area around the face of the owl until no clear distinction between the two layers can be recognized. Notice here that the lower part of the bear's face extrudes out so we need to conceal it.

step 2 of 9

Use other part of the bear's fur to conceal the mouth, reduce the brightness to fit the shadow of the face. I used soft brush to draw the hairs on the face.

Creation of The Forest Guardian: Step 2

step 3 of 9

Use pen and eraser tool to cut off the background

Creation of The Forest Guardian: Step 3

step 4 of 9

Cut the horns of the deer and place on the front head of the bear, rotate to fit the angle of the head

Creation of The Forest Guardian: Step 4

step 5 of 9

To blend the horns to the head, focus on the transition. Use soft and small eraser to erase the transition area (from the fur to the horn). By this way, some fur will be added in front of the horns.

step 6 of 9

Use clipping mask layers on top of the horn layers and use soft brush (overlay mode) to paint with black or white color to adjust the light on the horn to fit the original image (the bear)

Creation of The Forest Guardian: Step 6

step 7 of 9

Cut the falcon's beak, place on the owl's beak, do the same as the horns. Reduce the color saturation a bit to fit the overall colors

Creation of The Forest Guardian: Step 7

step 8 of 9

Change the front image to the rock and background to the bokeh image. Use paint tool and clipping mask to draw the shadow on the bear's arms.

Creation of The Forest Guardian: Step 8

step 9 of 9

Use brush to adjust the overall lightning. Use Gaussian blur filter (1) to fit the background to the overall softness of the image. At final stage, some light dots were made on the top layer and expanded by moving blur filter. Grains were added to the whole image (after rasterizing)
