I drew out the design on a layer over the plain white background,

The base color is applied..... one color on each layer.

I merged the drawing and hair and blended with the smudge tool.
step 4 of 4
slowly I worked my way around the picture removing the drawn line or fading it and shading and highlighting with the burn and dodge tool. I added a dark background and a bit of grass.
