step 1 of 4

1.Cut out pins and change their colors by selecting out the collar adjust Hue or just replace.
2. Add the rope use warp copy, merge warp again until i get something like part 3.

3. Add helmet from the out-source. Used clone and some layers to repair it, also used replace color to make it green.

Creation of Not A Thousand Armies: Step 1

step 2 of 4

Placed a lot of pins some differently rotated, then merged and used an adj. layer to create depht via saturation& lightness and a gradient mask.

I made each side and NOT just flipp it, because the pins were different in color match as you can see.

It took a lot of time, to make it look right.

Creation of Not A Thousand Armies: Step 2

step 3 of 4

First I added the "rope holders" on their necks.
To make them it's easy 2 circles with fill 0 and drop shadow from layer styles, plus inner glow to make it look like the light hits them.
I hadd to apply it to each and every pin.
The same was with the ropes, not an easy job cause i also had to warp the heads to match the holder + pay attention to perspective, to where they go, if the look tense, etc, etc.

Creation of Not A Thousand Armies: Step 3

step 4 of 4

Added backgroudn from sxc.hu source, masked the sky.
Created lots of layers for highlights and shadows which i painted on the pins ropes, helmets, etc. Created other adj. layers for the depht, checking the saturation & light as we go further. Here's a view of what the psd file looked like.
Well i hope you like, any questions you have, you'll find me.
