Start with the background

Change the light distribution by paint over with overlay mode, make the bottom dark and the top bright

Put the octopus machine and the girl onto the upper layer

Put the machine with human face above the octopus layer

Make the shadow and light more dramatic by paint over with black and white brush, using the overlay and soft light blending mode

I used PTS CS5 with the puppet wrap tool. Use this tool, I can bend the basement of the machine fitted to the octopus.

The masking of the 3 first factors were done. The light comes from the top to the bottom, make the shadow of the machines fitted to that

... and the robot on the back. Make one layer with solid color above all the layers except the ones on the octopus. Use eraser to erase slightly some area to make the foggy effect

Colorize this image to the blue color, reduce the opacity, make the transparent zone beyond him.

Duplicate the father layer, use Motion blur effect, then Sharpen effect, blend with the beyond layer by Screen blending mode
