step 1 of 4

Crystal ball made from a tessellated ball. Subdivided and jittered to avoid making it completely spherical.

Bubbles added out of points, to make some natural solid flaws inside the sphere.

step 2 of 4

I made some simple fibers to simulate grass for the surrounding (only visible through refraction).

I placed some standard lights out for lighting. And one far away for the lens flaring sun.

Creation of Crystal Ball: Step 2

step 3 of 4

With the grass as bottom background, I made a sky with the sky tracer plug in. It took a whole lot of texturing with different procedurals.

Creation of Crystal Ball: Step 3

step 4 of 4

The crystal ball is textured with a glass preset for starter (not very advanced) and made too look more like a red/black crystal. To do that I made it 2.0 refractive (that's why it gets up side down). It's ~80% transparent and 20% translucent. The bubbles inside are 1.0 and completely transparent.

I also added small amounts of bump, diffuse, transparent, specular and translucent maps for small details.
