I used Photoshop CS3 here.
First I sketched my general vision and also started building a color palette. Since I'm drawing out winter, I left out most of the warm colors, even the skin's paler than usual.

Then I color in briefly to see if it works out, then put up some modifications.
Used mostly hard brush for the girl and soft for the background.

Then I jump into details. I forgot to stop myself to save so I skipped a lot of steps and since I mostly color on one layer, I can't go back, really.
I use the alt key to pick the color and use a semi-transparent brush so I can blend better. I used a scatter brush for the trees.
