Step 1 was to chop the dead tree from its source and move it onto my background cave photo. I started with it in the foreground, but will later move it.

step 2 of 8

Using a spider web reference, the web is begun using fine straight lines combined with several sizes of round brush strokes.

The web is slowly moving further along, trying to vary the sizes of circles, which also will have intensity and light varied.

step 4 of 8

Spider is moved in and chopped, using background eraser tool set at 17% discontiguous setting, and continuous sampling. After this chopping, a small eraser tool will complete the chop since background eraser leaves shadows around it.

At this point, I decide that I can do more with the web design by moving the dried wood further to the back of the cave. More web is now created from wood into the light ray area. This part of web will not show a lot of the little circles, so I use the dissolve mode of the brush tool set about 50% opacity and in light gray color.

Spider is duplicated here using alt key, then rotated (edit/transform/rotate) to get a new position for this one. Web in the light rays gets added on to using brush tools. I also have a pen tablet which I used for some of the initial layout drawing, but still have more control with the mouse after the layout is determned.

Here, more work is done on the web. Web in foreground will be done with slightly larger circles with shading in varying colors. Color sampler is used to select gray-blue tone, then more color changes are made with the burn and dodge tools. The lizard was also chopped and added , just to add more interest to the scene. It is shadowed and placed where it seems that the web is above it.

Finally, it is necessary to look at the whole light situation to be sure that where strong light is hitting the ground, it might also hit some of the web pattern (use dodge tool here) , and in other areas, burn tool can reduce the web brightness. Spiders must also have burn tool used on their shadow sides. Last of all, the overall brightness and contrast of the cave is brought up slightly. I usually check this in 'my stuff' entry before I upload it.
