A Work in Progress: Rainbow Bugs

I selected the original lady bug with pen tool and created a new layer via copy.

I created more eight copies of the lady bug and spread them out around the 'queen', following the leaf ribs.

For each copy I created a hue'saturation adjustment layer, changing the reds or colorizing the bug. I used the adjustment layer masks to leave the bugs' heads out of the process.

I created the bugs' shadows with the burn tool.

I made selection of the work path I created at the beginning and filled it on a new layer, just above the 'queen'. Applied layer style using 0% fill and outer glow to make the 'queen' stand out.

On a new layer above the source image I added shadows.

A created a new layer at the top and merged all layers, duplicated it, applied 20% gaussian bluer, overlay blending and 30% opacity.
