Ok, first I masked out the ship

I had in mind the general theme of the finished piece, so I went ahead and started the background. I used galaxy brushes by Sunira

I made the gateway rings like a vector image, using several objects and faking the shadows of each, then using lines to connect the rings. I used the ellipse selection tool to remove parts of the rings to give the sorta-crosshair-look. I added little generator thingies too for a little more detail.

And then I set up the ship inside the rings, made it match with the rings by selecting a ring, copying it, using it as a selection, then deleting the remaining part of the ship that I didn't want (and making it look a WHOOOOOLE lot better).
Then, I hated the direction, and flipped it.
Then I edited out the escape boats using the clone tool

Then to finish it all up, I added adjustment layers for lights/shadows, added layers for lights, added circles for probethingies, lines for lasers, and warped the ship in a few places to make it "spacey"
