Using selection tools, I cropped the skull out of the original source image. Then using the clone stamp, I tidied up the chin area.

For the fire background I used an image that I created with photoshop and placed a gradient layer masks over the layer.
step 3 of 4
The remaining background was filled using the clouds filter (and difference clouds several times). A gradient layer mask was applied on this layer in the opposite direction to the fire layer.
step 4 of 4
I built the pole using the rectangle selection tool, gradients, inner shadow and stroke. I then used it and the skull to compile an arrangement that I was happy with. This group was duplicated and flipped horizontally. Both groups had the poster edges filter applied and they were then placed to imply a gateway.
