Bumped up the overall contrast by:
Duplicating layer; Desaturate; Invert; Layer mode = Overlay; Turn down opacity slightly.

Extracted a part from the main body of cat for my 'fuzz ball' body.
Made the hairy edges by roughly masking out the ball then used the smudge tool with an irregular brush to smudge outwards on the edges for furry effect ;)

Extracted the bit of fur under the cats chin to create the 'mustache'.

Blended by masking and clone tool.

Lastly added shadows and highlites where necesary. used Dodge and Burn on a new layer filled with 50% grey and set to overlay to achieve this...
