Vanitas - Drawing Contest [4 entries]

Time Catches All Picture

Winning entry, with a score of:
72.7%
Contest goal:

Digital Drawing: In the world of arts, vanitas is a type of symbolic work of art especially associated with Northern European still life painting in Flanders and the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, though also common in other places and periods.

The word is Latin, meaning "emptiness" and loosely translated corresponds to the meaninglessness of earthly life and the transient nature of vanity. Digitally draw your own interpretation of emptiness.
REMEMBER these contests require that you post at least 2 intermediate steps of your drawing in a step by step guide, so we can see the progress of your work.

MossyB: More info: A vanitas painting, while possibly containing lovely objects, always included some reference to man's mortality ( 5 years and 3262 days ago )
downoffthedragon: MossyB is right. They almost always included a skull somewhere in the image! Actually, I can't remember a Vanitas painting that didn't include a skull. ( 5 years and 3262 days ago )

This is my first try at a digital drawing that was done with nothing but basic brushes and allot of experimentation on how to achieve certain looks without using styles, filters, or layer fx.
Was a real challenge but I do think I will try something like this again,
Hope it turned out ok, (5 years and 3250 days ago)
