Step 1

By using the line style form for each drawing, you are working on muscle memory, line placement and pencil control. The drawings will also help you prepare for two forms of shading, line shading and crosshatching. You will also learn how to make a guide that will help when you draw faces, human or animal.

Please study each step image carefully, this isn't like graphic programs, allowing me to tell you what to do word for word, drawing is more visual and has to be studied carefully on each step.

Please keep a piece of tissue between the drawing paper and your hand at all times, do not slide the tissue, it will smudge your image!

Materials:
Tracing Paper - 8 sheets
Ruler - small one is best
4 pieces of 3 inch by 3 inch scrap of paper
No.2 pencil
Kneaded eraser

For Those of you who do not wish to do the entire tutorial, you will find each cat at these step numbers. Please read step one, it is important for each drawing.
Siamese - step 2 thru step 17
Tabby - step 18 thru step 44
Persian - step 45 thru step 60
Kitten - step 61 thru step 77

Step 1

Take one of your scraps of paper, the 3" x 3", measure and mark the width and distance between the eyes, measuring only the white of the eyes and not the out line. Mark it on your paper at one side. Do the same with the nose, pupils and mouth. Following the example in the picture. You will be doing one for each cat drawing. (Some people add the distance between the bottom of the eyes and the end of the nose.)

Step 2

Take the finished image of the Siamese cat and make your measuring card, you will need it later, measuring the distances and widths you need. Now roughly draw the starting circle for the head, try to draw it lightly. (My lines are all dark and thick, so they would show up on the scanner.)

This is just your rough drawing, it will not be part of the ending image, we will be drawing a grid on it in a later step.

Step 3

Now draw in the placement of the ears, don't worry about the circle lines cutting through them at the bottom, we will lose them later on.

Step 4

Now we will use the facial guide we made and use it to draw a grid on the partial face we have just drawn. We will need our ruler to measure distances, the placement of the eyes from the top of the head, the length of the nose from the bottom of the eyes and the height of the eyes, tracing all the lines in with the ruler and our facial guide.

Step 5

With the guide in place, we now know where to draw in the eyes, the nose, the pupils and the mouth. Draw them in now.

Step 6

Take a new piece of tracing paper and place it over the image you just drew, now slowly draw the head shape, ears, eyes, nose and mouth on the new sheet of paper. Adding a bit of fur texture as you draw the head.

Step 7

Darken the pupils and draw in the inner edge of the ears.

Step 8

Draw in the dark fur on the edges of the ears, as seen in the image.

Step 9

Draw in some fur into the inner ears and on the cheek area, image shows you where.

Step 10

Add the longer fur to the inner ears and start the fur around the eyes, looking at the
image for guidance.

Step 11

Slowly begin to draw in the mask area of the face, around and above the eyes. Use image as your guide.

Step 12

Now draw in the lines in the nose area, between the eyes and lower part of nose., Study the image to see where.

Step 13

Draw in the little nob at the end of the nose, line shade it dark, then draw in the lines around the lower part of the nose.

Step 14

Draw in the rest of the mouth, the lines surrounding it and then draw in the whiskers.

Step 15

Draw in the fur around the bottom of his head, using image as your guide.

Step 16

Draw in the collar and small studs on it, the image will guide you.

Step 17

Draw in the lines that go around the whites of the eyes, use a piece of tissue to keep from smearing your drawing. When you are done with this step, you should have completed the
Siamese cat head. I hope you enjoyed creating it.

Step 18

Now we will draw the Tabby cat head, while you will still be using lines, there will be a difference in their length and how close you draw some of them together. Make a new
measure guide as you did in Step 1 for the Siamese, using the finished image of the Tabby to get your measurements.

Draw a rough out line of your Tabby's head.

Step 19

Draw in the ear placement, remember, this is just our starting rough draft, the one used to make the grid on for facial feature placement.

Step 20

Using the guide you made for the Tabby's face, draw in your grid for where each feature will go. Remember to use your ruler to help you draw in the grid so each feature will be where if belongs. ( Like we did for the Siamese face.)

Step 21

Draw in the eyes nose and mouth, per image example.

Step 22

Take a new sheet of paper and place it over your grid drawing of the face. Redraw the head, ears, nose, eyes and mouth on the new sheet.

Step 23

Using the image as a guide, draw in the area surrounding the nose and mouth.

Step 24

Make the bottom part of the cat face rough, as if there is fur , use image as your guide.

Step 25

Draw in the fur lines at the nose tip and at the bottom of the mouth, using image as your guide.

Step 26

Draw in the area around the eyes, image will guide you on where to draw the lines.

Step 27

Finish drawing in the right eye fur that angles downward and draw in the inner ear edges.

Step 28

Start drawing in the fur on the outer ears, image will guide you.

Step 29

Fill in the fur to the inner ears, letting the image guide your pencil strokes.

Step 30

Start drawing in the fur on the left side of the face, image will show you where.

Step 31

Keep filling in the fur on the left side, letting the image guide you in placement.

Step 32

Fill in the fur lines, you will notice these ones are longer and spread further apart.

Step 33

Draw in the fur lines above the left eye, make sure you are using the tissue to protect your drawing as you work on it.

Step 34

Line shade the inner left eye and add the long whiskers near the top of the left eye.

Step 35

Draw in the fur on the lower left half of the face, the image will show you placement.

Step 36

Draw in the fur lines on the left side of nose are and then draw in the whiskers, let image guide you in placement.

Step 37

Draw in the fur above the nose area, using the image to guide you in placement of the stripes.

Step 38

Keep working on the stripes above the nose and right eye, with some fur lines added to the nose.

Step 39

Draw in the fur lines around the right eye and whiskers above eye, image will guide you.

Step 40

Fill in the shading lines in right eye and add more fur beside the right eye. Image will guide you on where to place lines.

Step 41

Draw in the small fur lines on the right side of the nose, then add the whiskers. Image will show you placement and size of lines.

Step 42

After looking at image, draw in the fur lines on right middle of face.

Step 43

Finish drawing in the fur in that area, using longer lines and more spread apart. Examine image to see what to draw.

Step 44

Draw in the small fur lines on the bottom right of face, image will show where they are to be placed. Congratulations, you have now drawn a Tabby cat face, well done!!!

Step 45

Now we are going to draw Our Persian Cat, they are different the previous two we have done, they are longed hair and we need to account for that in our drawing. Make your measuring guide for the face from the finished drawing so you will be able to draw in your facial features after making your grid on your rough draft.

Now get a new piece of paper and draw in a circle, make it bigger then the previous two.

Step 46

Draw in where the ears will go as you see in the accompanying image.

Step 47

Now draw in your grid for your features, using the measuring guide you made from the finished Persian drawing, image will guide you.

Step 48

With grid in place, draw in the eyes, nose and mouth. You can use accompanying image as reference.

You will notice that it's face seems smaller then the first two drawings, but we are drawing in some of its fluffy fur, to make it more realistic.

Step 49

Now take a new piece of paper and draw in the features. Please keep the original draft under the image at all times, you will need it to guide you as you draw in the fur.

Step 50

Now draw in the ears, try to be light handed when drawing them in, they are more fluffy then the Siamese and Tabby. Use image as your reference.

Step 51

Now we start drawing in the fur, starting on left side, draw longer lines, using image to guide you in your drawing.

Step 52

Finish drawing the out side fur around the head as you see in accompanying drawing. Don't hesitate to turn your paper as you draw them in for easier drawing.

Step 53

Remember to keep tissue between your hand and your drawing. Now begin to fill in the fur left of the left eye, image will guide you.

Step 54

Working your way down the left side of the face, fill in more fur. Using accompanying image as reference.

Step 55

Draw in more fur on left side, some above the left eye and then draw in the whiskers. Accompanying image will give a good reference on placement.

Step 56

Draw in fur above nose, some of right eye and on left side of chin, image will show you where for reference.

Step 57

Now draw in the fur around the right eye, use accompanying image as guide.

Step 58

Now draw in the fur around the right side of the nose and then draw in the whiskers. Using image to guide your placement.

Step 59

Draw in the fur to the right side of the eye and right cheek, checking the image to guide you on where to add fur.

Step 60

Using image as your guide, finish up drawing in the fur on the right side of the face. You did it it! You have just drawn the face of a Persian cat, well done !! Please give yourself a pat on the back for your accomplishment.

As a reward, I will now show you how to draw a playful Persian kitten.

Step 61

Taking a new piece of paper, draw a rough draft of the kitten as seen in accompanying drawing.

This will be our guide for drawing in the fluffy kitten.

Step 62

With a new piece of paper place over your outline, starting at the left ear, working towards the left, draw in the furry outline. Image will guide you.

Step 63

Draw the fur continuously down the back and some going to the right in lines, as seen in accompanying image.

Step 64

Draw in the fur, shaping it into a fluffy tail, using image as reference.

Step 65

Start drawing in the leg fur and above, working towards the right, using image as your reference.

Step 66

Draw in the back paws and some of the belly fur, image will guide you on placement.

Step 67

Finish drawing in the belly fur and shape out the front paw with the fur lines as seen in the accompanying drawing. Darken part of the back paw.

Step 68

Start drawing the side fur of the face and front of it's body, image will guide you.

Step 69

Start filling in more of the face fur, using image for reference.

Step 70

Draw in his eye, nose and some more facial fur, using image as reference.

Step 71

Using image as reference, draw in his raised front paw and more facial fur.

Step 72

Finish drawing in facial fur, mouth and right side whiskers. Use image to guide you.

Step 75

Now start drawing in the design on the butterfly wing, image will guide you or you can create your own.

Step 76

Finish drawing the design on the bottom half of the wing and then draw a wing behind it. Image will guide you.

Step 77

Now draw in the butterfly body and antennas, use image for reference. Woohoo! You are now done with drawing a playful kitten, I'm so proud of you!! You did it =) Congratulations!
