The design of the wing of an aircraft is obviously fundamental to the way the machine flies. It is also extremely important to the way our 3D model will look. Our eyes and brain are finely tuned to recognize shape, pattern and movement. Weather our final model is digital and viewed on screen or a physical model, its shape must be convincing or otherwise the illusion we are seeking will be lost. Rhino enables us to easily create accurate 3D representations of the surfaces we need for our model, provided we have good data from which to work .

We have recently had several questions regarding mesh generation from Rhino NURBS models. This tutorial shows some of the mesh tools in action and illustrates several methods of controlling the number of polygons used in the final mesh. This is important in any kind of 3D simulation, and can have a big impact on the size of our digital model files.. The more polygons the rendering or simulation software has to process. This leads to longer rendering times, or in a simulator, a slower frame rate and therefore the fluidity of the animation degrades.

Rhino has a handy feature called ‘Scripting’ where a series of commands can be saved and run. This is ideal for repetitive sequences or special purpose functions. Rhino has some powerful mesh tools, but as a NURBS modeller these are secondary to the main curve, surface and solid tools. We are using a NURBS model to generate the mesh models we need for our digital model. This could be done entirely using the various ‘mesh from model’ tools already in the Rhino toolbox, but some fine control over polygon formation would be useful. We will now script such a tool, then make a new button on the Rhino workspace and apply the script.

Rhino can place a bitmap image into each view of your model project. This can be used as a guide for constructing the lines, surfaces and solids that make up your model. It is important that these various images are scaled to match each other, and located in space so they all line up.
