We’re all used to working with style sheets (or least we should be). With each new version of InDesign, there seems to be a new way to style your content. We started with paragraph and character styles, then we got nested styles, followed by object styles, and finally table styles in InDesign CS3. As you can see, nested styles is not really new but it’s something that you should be taking advantage of, so let’s get to it.

Every now and then an app gets an update that really impacts your daily routine, and I’m happy to say that InDesign CS4 has some new-and-improved features that will do just that. InDesign is a page layout app, so anything that helps that process is a welcome addition, so let’s take a look at how CS4 will speed up your day-to-day work.

Going from print to Web just got a lot easier with Adobe InDesign CS4. In the past, we concentrated on going from InDesign to HTML or PDF. While the interactive features in InDesign still work nicely for PDF, they also now work for going to Flash. There are two ways to turn your InDesign document into Flash content. Let’s take a look at both of them.

InDesign has always supported the use of layers, but layers don’t always cut it when working with text. You can put a text frame on a layer and turn that layer on and off as needed, but it’s an all or nothing approach. What if you want to show and hide individual words or paragraphs and have the text automatically rewrap when you show or hide those words? With conditional text, it’s a breeze.

If you’re designing websites using Adobe applications, you probably fall into one of two camps: the one that’s already using Fireworks for fast prototypes or the one that soon will be. Fireworks has undergone an incredible transformation from a Web design application to an RIA (Rich Internet Application) layout prototyping tool. When Fireworks sits side by side with Photoshop and Illustrator, it’s easy to lose sight of what it can do. If you have one of Adobe’s Web suites, however, you’ll see that big yellow FW icon staring at you, taunting you, daring you to click it and find out its secret power.

Let’s tap into some of the 3D features of Adobe Illustrator. Though Illustrator doesn’t offer a 3D environment like a true 3D application, it does give you the ability to create 3D objects that can be modified within a 3D space. Texture mapping and light sources similar to those found in the high-end 3D applications are also available.

The combination of bringing Illustrator artwork into Photoshop and warping it offers some tremendous possibilities—but only if you know the super-secret trick to make it possible to warp a vector smart object. In our example, we’ll start with a basic calendar that we created in Illustrator and use Photoshop to change the angle and make it look more photographic.

Perhaps one of the most underutilized features in Illustrator is Live Trace, which can convert any photograph into vector art in just a few clicks. In this tutorial, we’re going to use Live Trace to vectorize a photo for a logo design. Now, of course, all images are different, so depending on the final effect you want to achieve, you’ll need to experiment with the settings that we’ll be using here.
